Article from Northcroft Thailand office
The global Pandemic devastated the travel industry and all the destinations that rely on it. Phuket, Thailand was one of those destinations but its fortunes are rapidly changing and this popular holiday destination is coming back to life.
How Phuket is being revitalised
In 2019, Phuket received over 9 million tourists but when COVID arrived, tourism stopped. By mid-2021, the Thai Government was ready to open its borders in a controlled and moderated way. On 1 July 2021, as part of that gradual re-opening, the Thai Government approved the Phuket Sandbox program. This allowed a limited number of vaccinated international tourists to visit Phuket for up to 30 days without the need to quarantine on arrival.
Based on the success of this Program, other destinations throughout Thailand were gradually allowed to welcome tourists. On 1st October 2022, the Thai Government lifted all restrictions for visitors entering the Kingdom. This leads the way for greater freedom, and by the close of 2023 the Thai Government is expecting tourism levels will be around 80% of pre-pandemic levels.
Long-term client renewing operations post-COVID
One of our first Phuket projects with Thai Wah Group was for Laguna Sheraton Phuket. That was in 1993 and back then, it was a revolutionary concept and located in a former tin mine at Bangtao Bay, Phuket. Today it is one of Asia’s premier integrated destinations offering:
- 8 world-class hotels
- Premium facilities
- Dedicated function areas
- Condominiums, villas and houses for rent or purchase
- With more entertainment and accommodation facilities in the pipeline
Just 2 years later, Banyan Tree Villa Resort was formed and we were asked to assist them with the development of their first bespoke wellness retreat located in Phuket. Again, this was a pioneering concept – offering visitors an ecologically sensitive, health-focused hospitality option.
Over the years, Banyan Tree Resort has developed an outstanding reputation for providing innovative, bespoke therapeutic treatments and premium self-care experiences. As a result, their operations have expanded across Asia, the Middle East, Mozambique, Mexico and Mauritius.
